The Richmond Community Blood Center’s (CBC) “Save A Life” Saturday blood drive April 13 turned into an outpouring of love and support in memory of little Cooper Newton of Cambridge City.
Cooper died last year at the age of six months after struggling with heart and lung problems and leukemia. His parents Clint and Beth Newton said Cooper received numerous blood transfusions as part of his treatment. They wanted to celebrate his memory with his “first heavenly birthday” blood drive.
The drive was an incredible success with 102 registrations and 82 blood donations for 182 percent of the collection goal. 45 of the people who registered were first-time donors.
“Wow, what a birthday celebration,” said CBC Richmond Rep. Melinda Frech. “Beth and Clint set out to have a huge party and they did just that! The wonderful helpers were Gunner and Gavin, Cooper’s big brothers.” IHOP provided a pancake breakfast, there were many special refreshments and giveaways, plus a live broadcast by KICKS 96.
West End collected $425 for CBC as a show of support from those could not donate Saturday. The drive culminated with a balloon release outside the Donor Center… a final heavenly first birthday wish sent to Baby Cooper.
